Storm's Experience With Aspirin
Aspirin for Dogs Can Be Dangerous!
by Steve Weber
I am sad to say Storm passed away on May 25, 2005. He died from very old age. He was a good dog.
My dog Storm had a near death experience several years ago, and it all started with one of his regular trips to the vet. I discovered the need to be very careful when using aspirin for dogs. He was fourteen at the time and a large dog weighing about 90 pounds. Because of his size, some charts estimated his human age to be around 88! Storm was getting more and more stiff with age. He had canine arthritis and was having difficulty getting up and he did not run like he used to. His stiffness was really starting to affect his everyday life.
The vet suggested we start giving him a coated aspirin twice a day. We noticed great results in just a week or so. Therefore, we continued giving him the dosage and he continued to improve. It appeared using aspirin for dogs really worked! It had been about a month or so when one Saturday afternoon he didn't seem quite himself. By evening he had gotten much worse. He would not get up to eat or drink, and he looked extremely ill. We really thought he must have had some major event happen. Perhaps a stroke or heart problem. We did not know. He seemed so very ill and so near death, I made the decision that I was not going to try to get him up and to the vet which was an hour away. I really believed his death was imminant, and I wanted him to be there at his home with us and the rest of his pack. His best bud, Lucky, was right there with him and concerned too.

I checked on him through the night, but his condition only seemed to worsen. Because he had been so happy and healthy acting the weeks before, we did not make the connection that this could have anything to do with the aspirin he was taking. But, to make a long story short, he was better the next day! I couldn't believe his miraculous recovery! I had been sure the night before was going to be his last!
Later, because of some stool samples we took to the vet, he determined that the aspirin had caused irritation in his intestinal tract which resulted in a very severe infection which almost killed him. (We have since learned this can happen in humans too!) So be very careful if using aspirin for dogs.
Storm recovered and was himself again in a few weeks. We of course stopped giving him the aspirin. But this only resulted in the return of his stiffness.
It was then I started researching the subject of dog arthritis. Storm needed something to help his arthritis which wasn't going to harm him! While researching, I kept finding references to Liquid Glucosamine for the treatment of both human and dog arthritis. Liquid Glucosamine is all natural, and there are no reports of any side effects whatsoever. On the web, I found many sites and forums with pet owners describing their success with Glucosamine. So I ordered some for Storm and gave him doses daily. In about two weeks we started seeing benefits! And in two months Storm was acting young again! He was running and playing with the rest of his pack (us and our three other dogs) more than he had in several years.
I don't know if every pet will have this kind of success, but I would strongly suggest trying Liquid Glucosamine for your dog's arthritis before risking any other kinds of drugs. And if further drugs are called for, be very alert to their possible side effects.
